The world famous Baltimore "Block" has been around for decades. It has always been an attraction for tourists, fishermen from the seaport, city laborers and even businessmen who worked in the area. Several famous entertainers got their start there, including comedian Redd Fox and Blaze Starr a famous stripper. It's colorful past and exciting future make it a spot not to be missed on your visit to Baltimore. The clubs on the 'Block" continue to change and reinvent themselves in order to maintain the aura of fantasy and sexual freedom they are so famous for. Many places have tried to duplicate what started here in Baltimore. But Baltimore's Block remains unique unto itself. (Story continues below photo gallery)

The Block started out as a entertainment center for all tastes and talents. There were comedy clubs, music clubs where you could hear the blues, theater, restaurants and last but not least burlesque houses. Initially, penny arcades and vaudeville venues dominated. But with the repeal of Prohibition the area catered more toward the burlesque houses and bars. The district sprang up almost immediately after the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904. Opened in 1906, the Gayety Theater is the Block's oldest landmark.

The twenty or so clubs that make up the Block are all located between the 300 and 400 block of East Baltimore Street. The ability to park in one place and walk from club to club makes for variety and convenience. The Block has been compared to the same atmosphere as Bourbon Street, New Orleans' famous adult playground.
